12 Easy Halloween Appetizer Ideas

1. Mummy Hot Dogs

Crescent dough strips wrapped around hot dogs, baked golden, with candy eyes. Full recipe below.

2. Mummy Jalapeño Poppers

Fill halved jalapeños with cream cheese and cheddar, wrap with thin strips of puff pastry, bake, then add candy eyes. For a crispier, faster batch, use our air fryer jalapeño poppers method and wrap them before cooking.

3. Spiderweb Seven-Layer Dip

Make your usual layered bean dip, then pipe thin rings of sour cream on top and drag a toothpick from the center outward to make a web. A plastic spider in the middle finishes it.

4. Pumpkin Cheese Ball

Shape a cheddar cheese ball, roll it in finely crushed nacho cheese chips so it turns orange, press lines in with the back of a knife and stick a mini bell pepper stem on top. Serve with crackers and a spoonful of pear chutney.

5. Witch Finger Breadsticks

Roll breadstick dough into knobby fingers, press an almond slice onto each tip for a nail, and bake. Serve with marinara “blood” for dipping.

6. Deviled Egg Spiders

Top classic deviled eggs with half a black olive for the body and thin olive slices for the legs.

7. Monster Guacamole

Spread guacamole in a shallow bowl, add two sour cream eyes with olive pupils and a jagged tortilla-chip mouth.

8. Graveyard Hummus Cups

Individual cups of hummus topped with crushed olives for “dirt” and a small cracker tombstone written on with a food-safe marker. Great for avoiding double dipping.

9. Jack-o’-Lantern Stuffed Peppers

Carve faces into small orange bell peppers and fill them with taco meat or a rice filling. Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes.

10. Bat Tortilla Chips

Cut bat shapes from blue corn tortillas with a cookie cutter, brush with oil, sprinkle with salt and bake at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes.

11. Frankenstein Pesto Crostini

Spread pesto on toasted baguette slices, add a strip of black olive for hair and two mozzarella pearl eyes.

12. Candy Corn Fruit Cups

Layer pineapple, mandarin oranges and a dollop of whipped cream in clear cups. A fresh option between all the cheese. For a sweet dip, our pumpkin cheesecake fluff is always gone first.

Mummy Hot Dogs Recipe

These are the easiest win on the table. The trick is cutting the dough into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide. Thicker strips puff too much and the mummy look disappears. Pat the hot dogs dry first so the dough grips, and leave a small gap near one end for the eyes.

Ingredients

  • 1 can refrigerated crescent dough sheet 8 oz, or crescent rolls pinched together
  • 8 hot dogs patted dry
  • 1 large egg beaten, optional for shine
  • 16 candy eyes or dots of mustard
  • ketchup and mustard for dipping

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment.
  2. Unroll the dough and pinch any seams closed. Cut into thin strips about 1/4 inch wide with a pizza cutter.
  3. Wrap 2 or 3 strips around each hot dog, crisscrossing and leaving a small gap near one end for the face.
  4. Place on the baking sheet and brush the dough lightly with beaten egg.
  5. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, until the dough is golden and puffed.
  6. Let cool 2 minutes, then press on candy eyes (a tiny dot of mustard helps them stick). Serve with ketchup and mustard.

Notes

Make ahead: wrap the hot dogs up to 4 hours ahead, cover and refrigerate, then bake just before the party.
Veggie option: use plant-based hot dogs or thick carrot sticks roasted until tender first.

Party Planning Tips

  • Plan 4 to 6 bites per guest if you’re also serving dinner, 10 to 12 if appetizers are the meal.
  • Mix hot and cold: two oven items max, everything else made ahead.
  • Keep food safe: don’t leave perishable dips and eggs out longer than 2 hours. The USDA “danger zone” guidance explains why. Set out smaller bowls and refill from the fridge.
  • Something warm for later: a pot of our pumpkin soup served in small cups is perfect once the trick-or-treaters are done.
